What Sports Federations Really Need to Know

Moodle is a free, open-source Learning Management System built for broad educational use – from universities to businesses. edubreak® is a specialised Learning Experience Platform (LXP) developed specifically for coach education in sports federations, built around video-based feedback and sports-pedagogical methodology. If you’re looking for a generic, self-administered learning environment, Moodle is a solid choice. If you want to train coaches in a practice-oriented way using video material from their own real-world context (user-generated content), backed by decades of expertise in sports education, edubreak® is the more targeted solution.

Good to know: If you’re already committed to Moodle and don’t want to switch, you don’t have to give up Social Video Learning. With the Interactive Video Suite (IVS) – an official Moodle plugin developed by Ghostthinker itself – you can integrate timestamp-accurate video commenting directly into your existing Moodle instance.

This article specifically compares edubreak®CAMPUS as a standalone platform against a plain Moodle installation without add-ons – not Moodle combined with the IVS.

Why this comparison matters for sports federations

Many national and regional sports federations across Europe are currently digitalising their coach education programmes – driven by the limited time budgets of volunteer coaches, growing licence-level requirements, and a desire for stronger practical transfer. When choosing the right platform, one fundamental question almost always comes up: is an established, free LMS like Moodle enough – or does it take a specialised solution like edubreak®, built from the ground up for sport and collaborative video-based learning?

This article breaks down the differences along the criteria that actually matter to federations in practice.

edubreak® vs. Moodle at a glance

Criterion Moodle edubreak®
Core concept Generic, open-source LMS for any educational context Social Video Learning platform, specialised in coach education in sport
Target audience Universities, schools, businesses, any industry Sports federations, sports organisations, (sports) education providers
Video/interaction features Video upload possible, but no native commenting/tagging logic in the standard installation. Can be extended with Social Video Learning via the Interactive Video Suite (IVS) – Ghostthinker's own Moodle plugin Video commenting and the Social Video Player are core, built-in features, not add-ons
Sports-pedagogical methodology Not included – pedagogy has to be developed and maintained by the federation itself Based on 20 years of Social Video Learning methodology, co-developed with federations such as the German Football Association (DFB), Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and DOSB
Focus on practical transfer No specific concept, depends entirely on individual course design Core design principle: linking online reflection directly with on-field practice
Implementation effort High: hosting, maintenance, update management and plugin upkeep sit with the federation (or an external agency) Lower: operation, hosting and further development are handled by edubreak®/Ghostthinker; rollout happens through tailored implementation programmes
Cost Software is free, but hosting, operation, customisation and support create ongoing internal or external costs Licence model bundling software, hosting, support and pedagogical consulting in one
GDPR/data protection Depends on the chosen hosting provider, responsibility sits with the federation Hosting and data protection concept are managed by Ghostthinker, on European infrastructure
Community/networking features Forums available, but no dedicated networking concept edubreak®COMMUNITY as a standalone networking platform built specifically for federation-wide communication
Scaling across licence levels/countries Technically possible, but a sport-specific structure has to be built from scratch Already in use across multiple licence levels and 8 European countries
Track record in sport Occasional use in general education, no dedicated sports track record DFB, ÖFB and other European sports federations as long-standing partners

When is Moodle the better fit?

To be fair: in some cases, Moodle really is the more sensible choice, and federations should weigh this openly.

  • A very broad, cross-disciplinary training offer – if a federation wants to train not only coaches but also administrative staff or volunteers across completely different subject areas, Moodle’s generic openness offers more flexibility.
  • Existing IT resources and Moodle experience – federations with their own IT department that already run Moodle (e.g. via an umbrella organisation) and can handle maintenance, hosting and plugin upkeep internally save themselves a provider switch.
  • Very limited budget without a need for consulting support – if there’s no interest in pedagogical guidance and course content is meant to be developed entirely in-house, the free base software is an advantage.

When is edubreak® the better fit?

  • Coach education centred on practical relevance – when video feedback, movement analysis and the link between theory and on-field practice are the priority.
  • Limited pedagogical capacity within the federation – when there’s no internal capacity to build blended-learning formats from scratch, and a proven, ready-made methodology is preferred.
  • Multiple licence levels and growing, pan-European audiences – when training needs to scale consistently across levels, languages or national borders.
  • Limited internal IT capacity – when hosting, maintenance and further development can’t or shouldn’t be handled in-house.

Frequently asked questions

Is edubreak® more expensive than Moodle?

The Moodle software itself is free, but hosting, technical maintenance, plugin upkeep and, where needed, external service providers create ongoing costs that are often underestimated. edubreak® bundles software, hosting, support and pedagogical consulting into a single model – a direct price comparison depends heavily on how much internal IT capacity a federation already has.

Can Moodle also be used for coach education in sport?

Yes, Moodle can in principle be used for any type of educational content, including coach education. However, the standard installation lacks native functions for video-based feedback, as well as a sport-specific pedagogical methodology. Federations that want to stick with Moodle can integrate Social Video Learning directly into their existing Moodle instance via the Interactive Video Suite (IVS) – an official Moodle plugin developed by Ghostthinker (the EdTech company behind edubreak® and the IVS) – instead of switching platforms.

Is Ghostthinker a Moodle competitor or a Moodle partner, then?

Both, depending on the context. edubreak® is a standalone alternative to Moodle as a complete platform. At the same time, Ghostthinker is itself the provider of an official Moodle plugin through the Interactive Video Suite, enabling Social Video Learning within Moodle as well. Which path fits best depends on whether a federation or educational institution wants to stay with Moodle in principle, or is looking for a specialised, all-in-one solution.

What's the biggest functional difference between edubreak® and Moodle?

The core difference lies in video interaction: edubreak® is built around Social Video Learning – commenting and reflection directly on video material are central, native features. In Moodle, video is primarily just another content format, without this specialised interaction layer.

Can edubreak® be integrated into an existing Moodle system, or do you have to choose one or the other?

edubreak® is introduced as a standalone platform, since its core features (Social Video Learning) are built on its own architecture. edubreak® offers strong connectivity through various options for linking to existing IT systems. Whether running both in parallel for different target groups makes sense depends on the specific case and can be clarified as part of a free Edu-Check.

Is edubreak® GDPR-compliant?

Yes, edubreak® runs on German hosting infrastructure, is 100% GDPR-compliant, and responsibility for the data protection concept and its implementation lies with Ghostthinker as the provider, not with the federation. Ghostthinker’s systems and processes also undergo regular external security audits.

Which sports federations already use edubreak® instead of Moodle?

Among others, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the German Football Association (DFB), the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB), as well as further regional and national sports federations in Germany, now use edubreak® for coach education across eight European countries.

What's better now?

Moodle and edubreak® solve fundamentally different problems at their core: Moodle is the flexible but unspecific base infrastructure that a federation has to fill with life itself. edubreak® is the specialised solution for anyone who wants to digitalise coach education in sport with a proven methodology, video feedback and personal guidance, without having to answer every pedagogical and technical question alone.
